OFFICAL INTRODUCTIONThe Lewis Chessman
Probably made in Norway, about AD 1150-1200
Found on the Isle of Lewis,
Outer Hebrides, Scotland
The chess pieces consist of elaborately worked walrus ivory and whales' teeth. The bold simplified figures epitomise the Romanesque style. They are superbly designed works of art.
By the end of the eleventh century, chess was a very popular game among the aristocracy throughout Europe. Of the ninety-three pieces known to us today, eighty-two are in The Britsh Museum.
The queen is seated and rests her head on her right hand. She carries a horn.
The warder stands holding a sword in the right hand, a shield against their left side. He bites the top of his shield.
The bishop wears a mitre and they carry a crozier and a book or blessing. The back and sides of the throne are richly decorated.
The King is seated on a throne, a sheathed sword held across the knees.
The knight rides his pony with bridle and stirrups; he has a spear in the right hand, a sword on the left and carries a shield.
最有意思的是warder(狱卒),不知道为什么不是pawn(国际象棋里的卒)。
